Piazza Grande

Les Plages d’Agnès  (The Beaches of Agnès)

France · 2008 · DCP · Color and Black and White · 110' ·  o.v. French/English

Director Agnès Varda takes us on an autobiographical stroll, visiting the beaches that provided the settings for seminal moments in her life: from when she was a child in Belgium to when she was a young girl in the south of France, and finally to her later years in California with husband Jacques Demy. But there are also inner beaches or beaches of the mind, like the one transported to the street outside her Paris home, transformed for an instant into a “Daguerre-Plage”. A personal history in pictures that returns to fundamental phases in French cinema history, weaving public and private struggles, loves and friendships, films and people, all filtered through Varda’s gentle, ironic gaze.

Other films by Agnès Varda, this year’s recipient of the Pardo d’onore Swisscom, will be screened in the Premi speciali section.
