Round table discussion "The Locarno Critics Academy Presents: Do Film Critics Still Matter?"

The Critics Academy is organized in collaboration with the American film website Indiewire, the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC), the Swiss Association of Film Journalists (SVFJ) and

The selected film critics will be invited to Locarno to cover the Festival by filing reviews of films in the selection, articles on sidebar events, in-depth reflection on the various program sections or interviews with the Festival’s guests.

The program for participants will be organized on a daily basis by Indiewire’s Chief Film Critic and Senior Editor Eric Kohn and Eugene Hernandez (Deputy Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center). Starting this year, the Critics Academy will dedicate an additional program to swiss participants, thanks to the collaboration with the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), the Association of Swiss Film Journalists (SVFJ) and the website The swiss participants will follow the general Critics Academy’s program and they will work under the editorial guidance of SVFJ and

The reviews and articles of the 10 participants may be published on Pardolive (the Festival’s website and daily newspaper), on Indiewire’s blog Criticwire, on Film Society of Lincoln Center’s filmlinc website and on the swiss website

Furthermore the program includes conversations with critics in Locarno, roundtables with guests and discussions with professionals, to connect the young critics to the workings of the industry.

The working language is English.

Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in film criticism as well as the ability to speak and write fluently in English.

The swiss participants must speak fluently in English, but they will write articles on their language (German, French or Italian).

The Critics Academy allows young participants to:

  • Enjoy the accommodation and buffet breakfast at the Youth Hostel (semi-private) in Locarno from Tuesday, 5 August to Sunday, 17 August (12 nights);
  •  Follow the Festival with full press accreditation;
  • Review Festival’s films and events according to the editorial line set by the coordinator;
  • Participate at some of the Locarno Summer academy's meetings;
  • Enjoy the group dinner of the Locarno Summer Academy with Festival’s guests.


Practical information:

Travel expenses as well as noon and evening meals will be at the participant's expense.
Indiewire may assist with a share of the travel expenses depending on the country of origin of the partcipant.

We advise you to fly to Locarno via Milan Malpensa airport, from where a shuttle transfer service will be available and free for the participants.

We suggest you budget for an average of CHF 20-25 per meal.

Applications to the Critics Academy can be submitted from 16 April through 25 May 2014 using the form downloaded from the box at the side of this page, together with the following documentation:

  • Motivational letter (300 words or less)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • 4 articles/film reviews in English (for swiss participants 4 articles in German, French or Italian)
  • Photograph of the candidate
